LET'S GROW PRESTON SITES

ASHTON COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Let's Grow Preston Ashton Community Garden was previously two bowling greens, however due to city council cuts the council could no longer afford to maintain two greens. Let's Grow Preston were offered the use of one of the greens to save it from falling into disrepair.

Ashton walled garden is split into four quadrants, edible garden, peace garden, the formal garden and workspace were we have sited a poly tunnel.

The edible garden contains the fruiting shrubs, the apple trees, raised beds and the fig tree. The plan is to furnish it with as many edible plants and flowers as we can.

The peace garden is a cottage style garden using predominately blue and lilac hues, yellows and pinks, with a moon gate delineating a more architectural and more vibrant color scheme.

The formal garden used plants from three families, plus grasses and bulbs. This is to keep the design simple and to demonstrate the diversity of Geranium, Rose and Aster, Sitting along side is a wild flower bed.

The workspace is where we display our stock of plants which leads onto the poly tunnel.

The Let's Grow Preston makes up part of what used to be the 'Walled Garden' of Ashton House. The rest of the site is also occupied by Dig in NW and AFG (The Armed Forces Group). Both of these groups do great work  supporting people from the military community who are struggling to come to terms with their experience and/or struggling to integrate back into civilian life.

The 'community garden' on this site has been developed with the help of funding from the Lancashire Environmental Fund and over the next few years plan to see it develop into a beautiful garden that will will use for training, volunteer and growing stock plants.
